Biography
Dr. Tricia Ong is an award-winning feminist scholar, educator, and public health researcher who is deeply committed to social justice. With a background as a creative arts therapist, her work is dedicated to advancing accessibility, inclusion, and equity.
A leading figure in feminist sensory sociology, Dr. Ong is the pioneer of the Clay Embodiment Research Method. She originally developed this groundbreaking, feminist arts-based approach - using clay body mapping and photography - to empower low-literate, marginalized women sex trafficked in Nepal to participate in culturally sensitive reproductive health research and have their voices heard. Her body of published work, including her book, A Feminist Approach to Sensitive Research: Designing the Clay Embodiment Research Method, earned her the International Visual Sociology Association's (IVSA) 2023 Rieger Paper Award for her outstanding contribution to visual sociology.
Dr. Ong's commitment to ethical and inclusive practice is a core part of her work. As a leader of the IVSA's Australia and New Zealand working group, she has been instrumental in the recent review and development of the IVSA Code of Research Ethics.
